August 24-31 Luke: Encounter with Jesus - Weekly Study Guide II

Day 1: Read Luke 9:1-17

What did Jesus send his disciples out to do? What was their mission? Their strategy?

How did King Herod react? Why?

Where did Jesus take the disciples when they returned from their ministry? Why?

What happened to spoil their retreat? How did the disciples respond? How did Jesus respond?

How do you balance ministry and rest in your life? What do you need to do more: get going, or slow down?

How do you react when God gives you another challenge instead of the rest you wanted? Give a recent example.

Day 2: Read Luke 9:18-27

Why might Jesus be interested in this opinion poll? How did Peter's answer differ from the crowds?

Why do you think Jesus told them not to tell anyone who he was?

Once they understood is identity, Jesus wanted the disciples to understand his mission. How did he describe his mission in (22)?

Why would the necessity of Jesus' suffering and death be difficult for the disciples to understand, especially in light of (20)?

Jesus said that he must die and then rise again. How is this same pattern repeated in the lives of his followers (23-25)?

How can a person save and lose their life at the same time (24)?

What has your commitment to Jesus cost you? What have you lost to follow him? What have you gained?

Day 3: Read Luke 9:28-45

What happened on the mountain while Jesus was praying? How does this relate to Peter's statement in (20)? To Jesus statement in (22)?

How did Peter respond to what he saw? How do you evaluate his response? Explain.

What was happening below while they were on the mountain?

How serious was the storm that arose as they crossed the lake?

Why does Jesus seem to be impatient (41)?

After the healing, what did Jesus teach the disciples? Why did they not grasp what he was saying?

Do you believe evil spirits are still active in our world today? How would you respond if someone came to you to drive one out?

Day 4: Read Luke 9:46-62

What impresses you about Jesus in these episodes? Why?

Throughout chapter 9, how have the disciples been measuring greatness? How does Jesus define greatness? How do you see these two definitions lived out in the world around you?

How did John respond to people who were not part of Jesus' band at that time, or who rejected him? What do you think his motives were? How did Jesus respond to those same situations?

What promises did potential followers make to Jesus in (57-62)? What conditions did they place on their promises?

How did Jesus respond to each one? What theme that keeps coming up in all of his statements to them?

What excuses have you used to avoid following Jesus more fully? What might he say to you if you were included in verses 57-62?

Day 5: Read Luke 10:1-23

For what purpose does Jesus send out 72 of his followers? What is their basic message? What instructions does he give them?

How does the image of a kingdom ("the kingdom of God") describe what it means to follow Jesus?

How is a Christian who witnesses for Jesus like a "lamb among wolves"? What encouragement does Jesus give us when our witness is rejected?

At what point does the good news of God's kingdom become a message of judgment?

What kind of report did the 72 give when they returned? How did Jesus seek to redirect their enthusiasm?

How do you feel about the harvest where you live? Are people ripe to hear the good news? What would it take for you to be more involved in the harvest?

Day 1: Read Luke 7:36-50

Under what circumstances was Jesus tempted? What had just happened? What might his mood have been as he went to the desert?

Evaluate each temptation: what was its appeal? What was its cost? How are the three temptations similar? Different?

How did Jesus resist the devil's temptations? How does Satan's use of Scripture differ from the way Jesus used it?

The divine Sonship of Jesus had just been confirmed at Jesus' baptism. How are the temptations directed against Jesus' Sonship?

If the devil had three "shots" at you, what temptations would he use? How do these compare to Jesus' temptations?

What can help you resist temptation in your life? What encouragement do you find here as you consider your own spiritual battles?

Day 2: Read Luke 8:8:1-15

Compare 3:21 and 4:1, 14, 18. What is the common element in each of these verses? Why did Jesus, as the Son of God, need to be empowered by the Holy Spirit?

What is significant about the time and place (verse 16) of Jesus' discourse from Isaiah?

Identify the five aspects of Jesus' mission (verses 18-19). How does he fulfill this mission literally? Spiritually? Then? Now?

What was the people's initial response to Jesus' words (21-22)? How did this response change?

What did Jesus say that made the people furious? What was his point?

Which aspects of Jesus' mission are most prominent at our church? Which ones do you feel are neglected? How about in your life?

Day 3: Read Luke 8:16-25

How do these episodes from Jesus' ministry illustrate his mission statement from verses 18-19? Specifically, which of the five points of the mission are acted out in each scenario?

What is the response of the people to Jesus' miracles? How does this compare to the response of the people of his home town?

Why do you think Jesus found it necessary to retreat (42-44)?

What pressures was he facing? What were his priorities?

What do you observe about the kingdom of God from chapter 4?

How do you typically discern God's priorities and mission for your life amidst all the clamor of life and demands of others?

Do you need some time alone with God? For what purpose? What is holding you back from taking it?

Day 4: Read Luke 8:26-39

Picture yourself as Simon. What are you thinking, doing, feeling in verses 1-3? When Jesus speaks directly to you (4)? Why do you go along with his odd request?

What was unreasonable about Jesus' request (4)? What was the result of the disciples obeying it?

What did Jesus reveal to these men about himself through this incident? How did this prepare them for the odd request he was about to make of them in verse 10?

How did this miracle affect Peter? He was there when Jesus healed his mother-in-law. Why did this miracle have a more profound effect on him than that one?

In the business of your life, how do you see Jesus? Explain why.

A. interesting but slightly irrelevant teacher

B. potentially great partner if you could get him to work for you

C. the one who calls all the shots

Day 5: Read Luke 8:40-56

Who was healed in these incidents? What were their ailments? In that society, how did their ailments affect their lives?

Why did Jesus try to silence the leper? What was the result?

What do you observe about the Pharisees and teachers of the law in this passage? Why do you think they came to see Jesus? What might they have been thinking in verses 17-19? In verse 20?

His friends brought the paralyzed man for healing. Why did Jesus raise the issue of forgiveness of sins?

What new aspect of Jesus' identity and authority is revealed here compared to what we've read about him so far?

What motivates the people, the friends, the paralyzed man, the Pharisees, and Jesus to each act as they do

Who are you most like in this story and why?

Day 1: Read Luke 6:37-42

In (37-38), what does Jesus condemn, and what does he command? What does the promise in (38) mean in this context?

In (39-40), what is the relationship between student and teacher? What seems to be the point of this parable, in this context?

What do the speck and the plank represent in (41-42)? What does the activity of taking a speck out of a brother's eye stand for?

Does this teaching mean that we cannot correct someone else until we have mastered all of our own faults? Why or why not? How does the issue of hypocrisy (42) enter in?

How do we go about taking the logs out of our own eyes?

When have you had someone help you with a "speck" in your eye? What happened? Was it helpful? What did you learn?

Day 2: Read Luke 6:43-49

How does the tree and its fruit tie in with (37-42)? How does this help you recognize a kingdom person? How does it help you live with discernment in a fallen world?

What does the overflow of your mouth say about what is in your heart-especially in the unguarded moments?

What are the issues that Jesus challenges in (46-49)? What kind of response does he want us to make toward him?

How is hearing and practicing Jesus' words like building a house on a strong foundation?

What is the result for those who live in obedience to Jesus and for those who do not? In spite of this, why do people not put Jesus' teachings into practice in their lives?

Is your foundation strong or weak? What evidence can you give?

Day 3: Read Luke 7:1-10

What is a centurion? What do you learn about the centurion's character in this passage?

On what basis do the elders ask Jesus for help? How does this compare with the attitude of the centurion?

Jesus commended the centurion for his great faith. What was so great about it? How was it demonstrated?

What was the result of the centurion's faith?

As you live the Christian life, what practical difference does it make whether you live by confidence in your goodness, or by trust in Christ's power?

What are some issues where this distinction might show up in daily life? How might these two ways reflect themselves in a time of crisis?

What are you facing today that calls for trust in Jesus' power?

Day 4: Read Luke 7:11-17

Picture the scenario as Jesus is walking toward town and the funeral process is walking out? How many people were there?

How did Jesus respond emotionally to the widow?

What action did Jesus take? What was the result?

How did people respond to what they saw? What did they conclude about Jesus?

Was the people's praise toward God a response to Jesus' compassionate action to serve, or to the demonstration of his power?

How have you experienced Jesus' compassion and power?

How might you be able to show Jesus' power toward those in need around you? How might you demonstrate Jesus' compassion?

Day 5: Read Luke 7:18-35

What question was troubling John the Baptist? Why (see 3:20)?

How did Jesus answer the question? Why didn't he answer directly? What was the point of the answer he gave? (Compare Isaiah 29:18-19; 35:5-6; 61:1).

When and how did you come to realize that Jesus is "the one"?

What was the point of Jesus' questions to the people about John? What did he want them to understand about John?

How did the people's response to John differ from the response of the Pharisees?

How are the Pharisees like children bickering over which game to play (31-34)? How are the followers of Jesus and John like children proving God's wisdom to be right (35)?

Who are you most like in this story and why?

Day 1: Read Luke 5:27-39

Tax collectors enriched themselves by gathering taxes for the Romans, often using extortion. How might Simon and his friends (5:1-11) feel about Jesus' choice of Levi?

What was the complaint of the Pharisees? What values and priorities of theirs lay behind this criticism?

What justification did Jesus give for hanging out with unrighteous people? What is the irony in his statement in (31-32)?

Why was Jesus questioned about fasting? What is his response?

What is Jesus' point in the parable of (36-40)? How does this relate to the criticisms made of him in this passage?

As you relate to "undesirable types", are you more like Levi (inviting), the Pharisees (looking down), or the disciples (unsure)?

Day 2: Read Luke 6:1-11

What do these two incidents have in common? What is the main issue here for the Pharisees? For Jesus?

How does the story of David (see 1 Sam 21:1-6) apply to Jesus and his disciples? What underlying principle does it illustrate?

Jesus deliberately healed the man with the crippled hand on the Sabbath? What point was he trying to make by his actions?

How did Jesus use these two episodes to clarify the whole Sabbath issue? How was his approach to the Sabbath different from the Pharisees?

What impresses you about Jesus in these scenes?

As you follow Jesus, do you find yourself becoming more free to serve, or more constrained to follow religious rules? What does this look like in your experience?

Day 3: Read Luke 6:12-16

What was one of the best teams you were ever a part of? Why?

What did Jesus do to prepare for putting together his team?

How is this group different from the general group of disciples who had begun to follow him?

Compare Matthew 10:1-4 and Mark 3:13-19. What do these parallel passages tell us about the purpose of Jesus' calling these men and what their role was to be?

In what is the calling and role of these first apostles unique? In what ways does this apply to every Christ-follower?

What does it mean for you to "be with" Jesus? To be "sent out" by him?

Day 4: Read Luke 6:17-26

The rest of the chapter is called "The Sermon on the Plain." Who is in the crowd? Why did the crowds come to see him?

How did Jesus teachings correspond to his actions?

How do the blessings in (20-22) relate to the woes in (24-26)? How do these sayings correspond to Jesus' mission in chapter 4?

When will these blessings and woes be experienced? Now? In the future? Both?

How does this passage define the kingdom of God? How is this different from some of the values of contemporary Christianity?

How do you feel about the values espoused in these blessings and woes? How do they relate to what you value the most in life?

If you could add another "blessing" and "woe" to speak to the culture of America in 2008, what would you add?

Day 5: Read Luke 6:27-36

What seems to you to be the central theme of this passage? On what evidence do you base your conclusion?

How does Jesus change to focus of what loves mean from the common expectations of most people?

What specifically does it mean to love our enemies? How is this possible? What model does Jesus give of this principle?

To apply verses 29-30 literally in every case could simply embolden and encourage evil. So what is Jesus' point here?

How do you think this teaching challenged the self-righteous assumptions of the religious people who were listening?

How does this description of love challenge you?

In what specific ways have you received God's mercy? How might that be a model for relating to someone you find difficult?

April 27 - May 3 Tuning Up Our Thoughts - Weekly Study Guide II

Day 1: Read Ephesians 4:29 and 5:4

This week, ask the Holy Spirit to show you clearly whatever he wants to change in your patterns of speech. Be open to correction!

What qualifies as "unwholesome" speech? How would you define obscenity, foolish talk, and coarse jesting? Why are these contrary to your identity in Christ?

What kind of things should come out of our mouths instead?

Do you ever use God's name in any other way than worship and honor? Have you engaged in off-color jokes or conversation? Has the crudity or filthiness of our society crept into your speech?

Honestly examine your speech and ask God for forgiveness. Be specific in your confession of improper speech. Fully surrender your speech to the lordship of Jesus.

Day 2: Read Colossians 3:7-10

According to this passage, what is the relationship between the old life we once lived, and the new life we now have in Jesus Christ?

How does this new life affect our behavior, and in specific, our words?

For what reasons do people typically lie? What others forms does falsehood take beside telling an outright lie?

Have you lied to anyone this week? Do you exaggerate to make yourself look better? Do you consciously allow people to think something that isn't true? Are you guilty of any form of cheating? Do you mislead others? Are you careful to follow through with promises and commitments you've made?

God hates lying and its cousin, unfaithfulness. If the Holy Spirit reveals an integrity problem, fully confess and renounce any patterns of deceit, untruthfulness or unreliability.

Day 3: Read Philippians 2:14-15

Why are complaining and arguing out of character for a Christian's speech? What are the usual results when people voice complaints and arguments?

1 Thessalonians 5:18 calls us instead to "give thanks in all circumstances." Why do we tend to complain instead of giving thanks?

When we complain instead of giving thanks, what does that say about our view of God?

Do you often gripe about situations in your life? Do you tend to be contrary in most situations? Do you fail to give thanks when circumstances are difficult? Do you make excuses by saying, "I have good reason to complain."? Are you always looking on the dark side of things?

It is impossible to be a complainer and live by the power of God's Spirit. If you will praise him instead of dwelling on the negative, God promises to give supernatural joy even in hard circumstances. Be specific about ways you need to rejoice and give thanks.

Day 4: Read Ephesians 4:31-32

What are the alternatives presented in these verses? What part do words play in creating a church family that is like verse 31? Or one that is like verse 32?

What does a Christ-follower do to "get rid of" all slander from oneself? How do you help get rid of slander when it crops up in the congregation?

Are you guilty of critical, angry speech? Do you argue and fight with others? Are you quick to raise your voice? Do you speak unkindly to those in your family? Are you guilty of any form of gossip or slander of others? Do you speak evil of people behind their back?

God intends his church to be different from the world: a place of healing and transformation, not contention. These are serious sins: immediately confess and forsake them today.

Day 5: Read 1 Timothy 5:17-20

How is the church to treat its elders? Along with financial support, what constitutes honor toward these men?

What actions must the church avoid toward its elders? If a church's leader does fall into sin, what is the appropriate way to handle it? Whose job is it to do the public rebuke?

Have you witnessed inappropriate accusation or criticism against church leaders? How did it happen? What was the result?

Have you been critical or slanderous of Christian leaders? Do you undermine the authority of those called to lead the church? Do you tend to pick them apart rather than give consistent encouragement and prayer support?

Is there anyone you need to approach to retract some criticism you've made against our elders? God will not fill your life with his power until such sins of speech are confessed and forsaken.

Our Ministry - Home

Our single focus is to produce mature followers of Jesus Christ who model his character and priorities. To this end, our ministry consists of three key environments.

Our Worship Gathering reminds us of the God we serve and his saving story. We come to reinforce our new identity, values, mission and lifestyle as Christ-followers. You can hear recent sermons, explore our children's and youth ministries, or learn about our worship style.

The Ascent is a highly intentional training process that develops the knowledge, attitudes, motives, and behaviors that mark a growing follower of Jesus. Follow the link to learn more about this "climb" to maturity.

Communities are weekly gatherings where we share life together, learn life lessons from the Bible, stimulate one another to live fully obedient to Jesus, and purposefully organize to engage the needs of the city and the world.

Wasatch Church has issued a call! - Assoc. Pastor Search

After serious deliberation, the Search Committee and Elder Board presented a unanimous recommendation to the congregation to call Emilian Mihet to serve as Associate Pastor. Following a thorough and healthy discussion, the congregation likewise voted unanimously to extend this call to join our ministry team.

Emilian has received serious overtures from two other congregations. He has a candidating visit to these other churches on the weekends of August 10 and 17, after which he has told us he will fast and pray for God's leading about where to serve. We can expect to hear back from him about his decision around August 20.

Please be in prayer for God's leading in Emilian's life, and if he chooses to come to Utah, for God's provision for everything he and his family need to make the transition to this ministry.

The Worship Gathering - Planning to Visit?

Our Worship Center is to your right as you enter the front doors - right behind the Welcome Desk. The worship style is upbeat and contemporary - with guitars, bass, and drums. Most people dress casually. We're not trying to impress anyone, so come as you are.

On most Sundays, you will hear a message from the Bible that relates to the issues of our lives. There's a place to take notes in the flyer you received at the door.

Almost every Sunday, we practice a ritual called The Lord's Supper (or Communion). Small samples of bread and grape juice act as symbols of the sacrifice Jesus made on the cross for us. You don't have to be a member of Wasatch Church to participate. But if you're not a follower of Jesus Christ yet, we encourage you to just watch or meditate. (We don't want to ask you to falsely symbolize something that is not yet a reality in your life.)

Unlike many churches, we do not receive a public offering during worship. We encourage people to give as a deliberate decision between you and God, not because the basket is coming down the row. Giving is an act of worship, and if you choose to do so, you can place your gift in one of the offering boxes in the wall behind the Worship Center.

As you enter the glass front doors, someone will greet you and offer you a flyer about the day's events. You will see people putting on name tags. We print tags for our regular attenders. Please make yourself a name tag so others can meet you. If you would rather stay anonymous, that's okay too.

To your right, down a hallway, you will see our Welcome Desk. The people there will show you where to take your children, tell you about the morning's schedule, and answers your questions. You may be asked to sign our guest book. If you're comfortable doing so, this will allow us to keep in touch with you.

If you need to use a restroom, you have three choices. From the lobby, go down the hallway past the drinking fountain. Others are located in the hallways to your right and left as you face the Welcome Desk.

Your children are welcome to come into the worship gathering with you. However, we also offer age-graded classes where your kids can learn and grow, while enjoying fun activities and making friends. These classes meet at both 9:30 and 11:00, so you can also visit one of our Communities along with worship. To create a safe place for our kids, we do background checks on all of our children's workers.

The Nursery

As you face the Welcome Desk, the nursery is down a long hall to your left, on the left side. Our loving nursery team provides comfort and security for children from newborn to 30 months.

The Preschool

Classes for 3 year olds through kindergarten are in the west wing, to your left and down the hall as you first enter the building. Children really have a good time in these classes!

Elementary

Our elementary aged classes meet in two different places. During the 9:30 service, turn left as you approach the Welcome Desk. Go up the hall, and you'll find the elementary classrooms on your right. During the 11:00 service, we combine the elementary grades for different types of activities. Go upstairs to our Youth Room, on your left as you enter the front doors.

Youth

Our youth group (grades 7-12) meets at 9:30 a.m. Their room is upstairs. Look to your left as you enter through the main doors. The Youth typically attend worship at 11:00.

Climb Higher in Your Christian Life! - The Ascent

Is your Christian life superficial or supernatural? Are you ready to grow into a more satisfying and fruitful walk with Jesus? Consider enrolling in The Ascent, which kicks off on Tuesday, September 9!

Jesus told his church to go and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18). Thus we are intentional about training Christians to become fully-formed followers of Christ, becoming more like Jesus in the three core relationships of life:Our relationship with God.Our relationships with other Christ-followers.Our relationships with people who do not yet follow Christ.

The Ascent is a challenging growth environment designed to develop Christ-followers to maturity in knowledge (head), affections and motives (heart), and lifestyle and behavior (hands) - using a combination of classroom and small group Bible study, individual and peer coaching, and obedience-based assignments.

If you desire to accelerate your growth as a follower of Jesus, you can register for The Ascent on Sundays at the Welcome Desk, or by following this link: Ascent Registration.

August 3-9 Luke: Encounter with Jesus - Home

About Emilian Mihet - Assoc. Pastor Search

We have invited Emilian Mihet and his wife Maria to interview at Wasatch Church for our Associate Pastor position. The Mihets will be with us over the weekend of July 25-27. Here is some information about the candidate.Emilian is a 1999 graduate of the University of California at San Diego with a degree in Mathematics and minors in History and Chemistry. He also graduated from Fuller Theological Seminary in 2007 with a Master of Divinity degree. He married Maria on July 21, 2005. Their son Eliam James is 13 months old. They currently live in Chatsworth, California - near Los Angeles.

Below are some of his responses to our candidate questionnaire:

1. Explain why you believe you are called by God into ministry.

God has called to tend His Sheep, Jesus called me to follow Him, and His Last words search me deeply: the Great Commission. My life verse is Mat 6:33 and commission in life is to seek His Kingdom and righteousness first. Even though I come from a family line that has been involved into ministry and they devoted their lives to ministry, it did not affect me, the call comes from God and even from the end of High School I knew one day I would go to seminary and be a Pastor. Ministry is the narrow road that Jesus has called me on, I would like to be a faithful and obedient servant.

2. Explain your vision of what you hope to see happen in a person's life as a result of your ministry.

My vision is that the Word of God becomes alive in people, and the resurrected Christ is vividly seen in His church by all, going against the Prosperity Gospel...my view of success in our life is not and can't be greater then for someone to say Jesus is alive and well and I saw Him at that church or in that individual's life.

3. What are your spiritual gifts?

Shepherding, Discernment, Teaching, Helps and Hospitality

4. Explain why you are interested in living and serving in Utah.

I am a servant of God and serve Him wherever He sends me...the situation of the evangelical church being a minority attracts me from my past...

5. Is there anything else you would like to let us know about yourself in the area of your vision or philosophy of ministry?

My ministry philosophy is being vs doing. A Christian does not do ministry but out of His being with Christ doing flows... John 7:38: "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, ‘From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'"

6. Briefly describe the circumstances of your conversion to Christ. Describe how God has worked in your life since coming to Christ.

I was born and raised in a Christian home, Transylvania, Romania in Eastern Europe. It is very much like your location, God's country 8-) ...mountainous range of the Carpathian Mountains. My great grandparents were among the very first born again (protestant) Christians in the area. They evangelized the area and helped in building a few churches. We also lived under persecution and oppression from the Communist Government, so the quality of the Christian in those days was not lukewarm. My first taste of what it meant to be a believer was when I was 5 years old and my little sister was almost stabbed to death at an incident where my grandma was sharing the Gospel. Nonetheless, the Lord drew me closer to Him and I saw the Holy Spirit at work in my life from about 9 years old and onward, at a hidden Christian camp in the mountains. Prayer, God's word, peace and power to transform my life were continually present.

I came to the US when I was about 14 years old and was part of First Presbyterian Church of Hollywood; where I grew in faith and by the time I was 17, I started sharing my faith and ministering. In college, I was involved with IVCF and led bible studies, outreaches and prayer meetings...at the same time I was in the leadership of a college/young adult group that started in a home and rolled about 250 people in 5 years (this was all in conjuncture with Mt. Soledad Pres.). Later I was called to help pastor the dying youth group (Mt Soledad Presb. & Faith Community). I did that for 5+ years and started attending Fuller Seminary...meanwhile I was heavily involved in mission's trips to Romanian, Ukraine, and Mexico, where I served as evangelist and senior pastor.

In the past couple of years I was the co-senior pastor for a couple of churches on the mission field and done some Children's ministry as part of my last internship at Fuller. Right now, I am in a transition period and praying for God's next call for our life, and the Lord would like to see me make a transition from the missionary trenches into the pious of the church. The Lord has blessed me with a beautiful and caring wife, Mari that is fully supporting me in our service to the Lord. We have been blessed with a beautiful baby boy, Eliam James (9 months old) and are waiting for another.

7. What church do you attend? Describe your present ministry involvement there.

I attend a couple of churches, Shepherd of the Hills (this one on Sat. cause most of my family goes there) and Pathway Christian fellowship a much smaller church where I am more involved...I am part of the prayer ministry, I sometimes am asked to preach or share, I also lead a men's bible study on the book of Revelation, and I do community outreach and evangelism.

8. Describe your personal devotional life. If married, describe the devotional life you have with your spouse.

Prayer, time in the word, prayer journaling, family studies, outreach/giving and serving. Keep sober and attentive to spiritual warfare and schemes of the devil. While we are to be clothed as warriors, personally I am called to be clothed with compassion and humility. So keeping in touch with the persecuted church and having some input into the missionary field is key in my relationship with Jesus.

I also take time for spiritual retreats, as well as leadership seminars. For me personally, fellowship with other missionaries is a very blessed time...I have found that if I am in a position where I have a chance to share the Gospel, or around people actively used by God to expand His Kingdom...it is wealth to my soul.

We have occasional studies together, we used to have them daily or a couple of times a day...we wanted to go through the NT together in stud twice. We also pray together and share our spiritual journey.

9. What do you like to do for recreation or entertainment?

Sports: tennis, table tennis, soccer, basketball, skiing, fishing, chess, solving puzzles and math problems, traveling, reading, family vacations...

10. What are your favorite books? Favorite movies? Favorite bands?

The Bible by far...from the OT Isaiah, and from the NT: the Gospel of John, My Utmost for His Highest, Best of Spurgeon, Turning Your Struggles into Steppingstones Lloyd Ogilvie, ...sorry I have too many

Movies: I have seen quite a few and like a variety: Lord of the Rings, Mr. Destiny, Ben-Hur, Once Upon a Time in the West, the 7 Samurai, Hidden Dragon crouching Tiger, etc

The Faith Builders Community meets at 11:00 am in Room 310.

Current Study: "Growing Kids God's Way" by Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo.

Growing Kids God's Way (Along the Virtuous Way) series is a comprehensive values-based parenting curriculum. In the title the authors, Gary and Anne Marie Ezzo, place their emphasis on God's Way meaning the way of the Lord. We serve an ethical God. Moral rightness flows from His being. His moral law is a reflection of His holy character (Psalm 19:7). More than that, He has shown man what is good and what is required of him (Micah 6:8). Growing Kids God's Way can help any parent reach the heart of children with virtues and values that flow from the character of God and do it without stressing the child or the parents.

Weekly study guides are designed to go along with Pastor Ross's sermons. This allows you to go deeper into the text that was preached on the past Sunday. The questions will provoke you to think and meditate on the scripture and ask yourself "the 5 W's and an H" (who, what, where, when, why, & how). They also are geared toward applying the Word to your personal walk with the Lord. Weekly Study Guides will remain posted for one month with the most recent guide on top.

As we gather for worship and relationships, our children have a safe, fun environment where they can grow together at an age-appropriate level, from newborns all the way through 6th grade.

Background checks on all volunteers, along with sign-in policies, insure a safe environment for our children.

Led by Jennifer Mueller, our children's ministry has three departments: nursery, preschool and elementary.

We gather weekly as a faith community to remember God's great salvation story, to refocus our attention and affection on God, and to remember who we are as followers of Jesus Christ in a needy, fallen world.

Here's a brief primer on what you can expect when you visit our Gathering.

The Gathering also includes safe and caring growth environments for our children and youth.

Matt has come to Wasatch Church from Lynchburg, Virginia, where Matt completed his undergraduate degree in Biblical Studies at Liberty University, and then his Master’s of Divinity degree at Liberty Theological Seminary. He is originally from Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where his family still resides. He has spent the past two years working on staff at the Liberty University Campus Pastor’s Office, as an assistant to the Campus Pastor. Matt enjoys running, college football and basketball, is an avid Liberty sports enthusiast, and has completed three 50-mile ultra marathon running races. Matt and his wonderful wife, Laurie, who hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma originally, have been married now for three years. Laurie is an elementary school teacher where she has taught in the Lynchburg Public School system for the past three years. She will now teach this school year as an elementary teacher within the Weber School District in Roy. Her hobbies and talents include singing, playing guitar and piano, leading worship, horseback riding, camping and music. Matt feels that God began the initial drawing of his heart to Utah in the beginning stages of his life as early as the age of 9. His burden for Utah has grown and taken greater shape over the years through various short-term missions trips to Utah over the years. Both Matt & Laurie came to accept the Lord in their youth, each through different Christian missionaries supported by their home churches in Toronto and Tulsa. Matt and Laurie have spent the past two years leading groups of college students on summer long mission trips to China during the months of June through August, where they have seen a lot of spiritual fruit. They both have a strong and passionate burden for missions, discipleship, evangelism and young people. Matt and Laurie are delighted to make their home at Wasatch Church and here in Roy, Utah!
